Amsterdam’s Required Information

The euro (€ / EUR) is the official currency of the Netherlands. One euro is divided into 100 cents. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Amsterdam, although it is still useful to carry a small amount of cash for small purchases or local markets.

The Netherlands uses plug types C and F (the standard European two-round-pin plugs). The country operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency. If you are traveling from a country with a different plug type or voltage, you may need a travel adapter and/or voltage converter.

Amsterdam Centraal Station is the city’s main railway station and one of the busiest transport hubs in the Netherlands. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, it offers frequent domestic connections to cities such as Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven, as well as international rail services to destinations including Brussels, Paris, Berlin, and London. The station is operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS).

Amsterdam has one of Europe’s most efficient public transportation systems, making it easy to travel throughout the city without a car.

The city’s public transport network includes:

  • Metro
  • Trams
  • City Buses
  • Night Buses
  • Ferries (free across the IJ River)
  • Trains (NS) for regional and national travel

Cycling is also one of the most popular ways to get around Amsterdam, with an extensive network of dedicated bicycle lanes and numerous bike rental services.

Most medicines can be brought into the Netherlands for personal use. However, certain medications—such as strong painkillers, sleeping pills, ADHD medication, and medicinal cannabis—may require an official certificate because they are regulated under the Dutch Opium Act.

To avoid delays:

  • Carry your medicines in their original packaging
  • Bring a prescription or medication passport if applicable.
  • If your medication requires a certificate, arrange it before you travel.

Amsterdam is primarily served by:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the Netherlands’ main international airport and one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs. Located approximately 17 km southwest of Amsterdam city center, Schiphol offers direct flights to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport is well connected to the city by frequent trains, buses, taxis, and airport shuttle services, with the train journey to Amsterdam Centraal taking approximately 15–20 minutes.

Getting around Amsterdam is convenient thanks to its variety of transportation options:

  • Taxi services are readily available throughout the city and at designated taxi ranks.
  • Uber operates extensively in Amsterdam and is a popular alternative to traditional taxis.
  • Bicycle rental is one of the best ways to explore the city, with numerous rental shops available.
  • Electric scooters and shared mobility services are available in selected areas.
  • Canal cruises and water taxis offer a scenic way to travel through Amsterdam’s famous canal network.

The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area. Travelers from many countries may enter the Netherlands without a visa for short stays, while others must obtain a Schengen Visa before traveling.

Visitors should ensure they meet the applicable entry requirements, including:

  • A visa (if required)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means
  • Evidence of accommodation
